What this blog is about!
Welcome to the very first blog post for Designed by Cherie. This blog is created for business owners, and their employees, who have a website and online presence but aren’t really sure how to manage their website, maximise its potential or create a really great online presence.
And if you are one of the many businesses, who doesn’t yet have a website, then this blog is for you too!
But before we go further, let me introduce myself. I’m Cherie and for the past 10+ years I have been working with my husband in our business, IP Active. IP Active is a business based on my husband’s skills and expertise with its main focus on helping organisations understand what intellectual property they are creating and how to protect it.
My role has been more focused on the behind the scenes work, such as managing the ‘books’, organising travel arrangements and providing general office support but over time what I do in our business has evolved and grown.
Today, as well as the duties I have always done, I am now more involved in the planning and promotion of our business. Part of that includes building and managing our websites and online presence and surprisingly enough, it’s this part of what I do that I enjoy the most. I have gone from technology phobic to fairly fluent in digital literacy.
I don’t claim to know everything, and anyone who claims to know it all you should be fairly wary of. It would be impossible to know everything because the rate of change in the digital and online world is rapid. I think that is why I like it so much because I love learning new things, new ways of doing things and testing it out to see how it works.
Over the past couple of years, I have been approached by people in business to help them establish their websites and online presence and slowly but surely my own little business has started to grow. Getting started online is not an easy thing to do. There is so much advice on what you should be doing and what is hot right now that is can become very overwhelming very quickly.
Should I be on Facebook or Instagram or both? What about LinkedIn? Email marketing, SEO, paid ads, oh … and someone said Pinterest is the place to be! It’s enough to make your mind spin!
What business owners want to know, is what is right for their business and how to do it. I know when we starte out, that is all we wanted to know but what I found is ‘experts’ gave very general one size fits all advice and mostly it wasn’t really right for our business and how we connect best with our clients.
What this blog is about
This blog is designed to help you, the busy small business owner, develop your online presence. Each week a post will provide you with simple actionable steps to help you create an online presence that is relevant to your business and help you connect with your customers.
It will also help you understand how to use your website to its full advantage and create a social media/digital strategy that is simple enough for busy businesses to achieve.
The reason for this blog is that I totally understand how overwhelming any sort of marketing can be and when it comes to digital marketing many businesses just don’t know what they need to do or if the advice they are getting is actually going to increase leads and sales.
When you start a business, generally you do it because you’re good at ‘something’, whether it is cutting hair, building houses, cleaning houses, caring for gardens, helping people grow their business by protecting their intellectual property. I think it is fair to say that most business owners don’t go into business to become marketing experts!
But the reality is, to have a thriving business you have to be good at being in business and part of that is marketing! After all, it’s important that people get to know about your company and what services and products you offer!
